---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Why manage driving at work? ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
For the majority of people, driving a vehicle for work purposes is the most hazardous activity they will undertake. (HSE 1996) It is estimated that around 200 road deaths and serious injuries each week involve someone at work. That means an estimated one third of all crashes involves somebody who was at work at the time - that's a tragic 1,000 lives every year.
In November 2007 THINK! commissioned research on people who drive for work. Research showed that those who drive for work don't see themselves as 'work drivers'. In fact, they specifically reject messages that explicitly tell them they're more at risk because they drive as part of their job. However, we know from research and the statistics above, that this group exhibit key risk behaviours and therefore need to be properly trained and risk assessed on a regular basis.
As well as causing accidents, bad practise and ignorance can result in increased vehicle wear and tear, excessive fuel consumption, prosecutions and higher insurance premiums.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Features ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
DriveWize has been designed to deliver a consistent driver safety training message, eliminate the bureaucratic problems of collating and analysing paper based risk assessments and to easily identify higher risk drivers who may benefit from further in car training.
The key attribute of all EssentialSkillz software is its ease of use and DriveWize is no different. It operates on the same management system (O-LAS) that powers EssentialSkillz market leading DSE risk assessment system.
Features of DriveWize include: 1. 40 minute e-learning course - encourage more individual responsibility for vehicle safety 2. Online driver risk assessment - rapid deployment, eliminates the paper trail 3. DriveWize Tracking and Reporting Tool - identify higher risk drivers who require further in car training
---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Flexibility ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Customers can easily adapt and amend the generic package, inserting company specific information such as contact details and links to driving policy documents for example, into customisable screens. Risk assessment questions can be altered, added or removed, even post roll out. The question set is dynamic, allowing users to skip sections that are irrelevant to them.
DriveWize can be delivered with the risk assessment preceding the training or the other way around. Deliver as mandatory training for all drivers or use as a training needs analysis tool to determine the level of instruction and support for each individual, the risk assessment acting as an alert to identify drivers whose mileage levels, behaviour or lack of knowledge may warrant more in depth training. These users can then be put forward for more in depth practical training behind the wheel.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Driving bans recognised in both Britain and Ireland ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
A new deal to keep disqualified drivers off the roads has been agreed between the British and Irish governments. The agreement - the first of its kind in Europe - means that British drivers disqualified for an offence in Ireland will be banned from driving when they return home. Likewise, any disqualification earned by Irish drivers in the UK will be recognised and enforced when they return to Ireland. The new rules will come into force in spring 2009 but will only apply to offences that attract an outright ban, rather than ones that ‘top’ a driver over.
"If a UK driver commits a serious offence like dangerous driving while in Ireland their ban should still apply when they return home,” said Jim Fitzpatrick, British road safety minister. "This pioneering agreement will make our roads safer by ensuring disqualified drivers are not able to escape their punishment and so keep dangerous drivers off our roads." However, there will still be no recognition of penalty points between Ireland and Britain. A Department for Transport spokesman said that the mutual recognition of penalty points between the UK and Ireland has been investigated. However, as Ireland has a different points system, such recognition would require primary legislation by the British legislature.
The move marks the first time any EU countries have acted to implement the international convention on driving disqualification, which ensures that drivers disqualified from driving in a an EU country other than their normal place of residence should not, on their return home, escape the consequences of that disqualification.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sat nav systems to provide safety warnings ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Details of the most dangerous roads in Britain will be programmed into satellite navigation devices to tell drivers when they stray on to them.
EuroRAP, the European Road Assessment Programme, a non-profit road safety group, is in talks with several sat-nav companies to allow them to use its risk map, which is published today.
The map shows that the most lethal road is a route through a tranquil beauty spot in the Peak District between Macclesfield, in Cheshire, and Buxton, in Derbyshire. The A537, also known as the Cat and Fiddle, is only eight miles long but there were 21 fatal or serious collisions on it from 2004 to 2006.
Sat-nav warnings will be tested this year and could be available by next summer. “It will say, 'You are entering a high-risk area. Please be careful'.”
Despite significant advances in knowledge, engineering practice and road-safety countermeasures, 30 per cent of the primary A-road sections do not achieve even the top two safest risk bands expected as the minimum safety level for these strategic roads.” Almost a quarter of motorway sections fall outside the safest risk band.
The most dangerous motorway is the M621 between junctions 2 and 2a in West Yorkshire, but motorways are relatively safe. Drivers are three times more likely to die on a rural road. The most improved road is the A38 to Tamworth, in the West Midlands, where fatal or serious accidents fell from eight in 2001-03 to one in 2004-06 after traffic lights were introduced and speed limits were reduced.
