Around the globe odd-bits ----------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Stress Busting Solutions! ----------------------------------------------------------------- EssentialSkillz Stress Busting Solution allows any organisation to cost-effectively measure and analyse stress on a company-wide basis. Our solution has 2 key elements: 1. EssentialSkillz Stress Risk Assessment allows organisations to conduct surveys in line with Health and Safety Executive's Stress Management Standards. Questions can be modified easily by any organisation, and our management system (O-LAS) reports the compiled results. Individual results are fully confidential, and automatic email reminders from O-LAS drive a completion rate of over 90%. Once an organisation has pinpointed key areas of concern, they can then set about tackling the sources of stress with intervention measures. In the case where an organisation has already organised 'Stress Busting' activities, our stress survey can be easily customised to measure stress levels pre and post those activities in order to gauge their effectiveness. With the problem areas identified the intervention budget can be targeted much more effectively. 2. EssentialSkillz solution can include a 40-minute stress training element designed to tackle the stigma associated with Stress and how to manage it. It's proven that training goes a long way towards reducing the number of Stress complaints, as employees who understand what stress actually is are better able to help an organisation identify the areas that will benefit from intervention services. Around the globe odd-bits ----------------------------------------------------------------- Drivers who use mobile phones are as bad as drunks behind the wheel ! Researchers from the University of Utah have found that people who talk on their mobiles are like many people who have been drinking, in that they did not believe themselves to be affected. Their study is published in the northern summer 2006 issue of Human Factors, the Journal of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society. The researchers used a driving simulation device for their study, in which they studied 40 volunteers who used a driving simulator four times - while not distracted, using a handheld mobile phone, using a hands-free cell phone and while intoxicated to a 0.08 per cent blood-alcohol level - the average legal level of impairment in the United States - after drinking vodka and orange juice. Motorists who talked on either handheld or hands-free mobile phones drove slightly more slowly, but were 9 per cent slower to hit the brakes, and varied their speed more than drivers who were not distracted. Drivers with an 0.08 per cent blood-alcohol level drove a bit more slowly than both the drivers who were not distracted and telephone users, yet more aggressively. Three study participants rear-ended the simulated car in front of them. The researchers concluded that "Driving while talking on a cellphone is as bad as or maybe worse than driving drunk.”.
