Fire Safety Online Training

  • Highlights the importance of understanding how fires start and spread, in order to identify fire hazards, prevent fires and maintain escape routes.
  • Details the actions that should be taken on discovering a fire or on hearing a fire alarm.
  • Highlights the use of Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans (PEEPs) and the appointment of buddies to assist people with additional needs during an evacuation.
  • Explains further action that can be taken in an emergency.

The EssentialSkillz Fire Safety online training course covers the prevention of fires and the behaviour expected in the event of a fire. The fire triangle is used to help the learner understand how fires are started, and how to spot fire hazards. Examples of measures required to prevent common fires are explained.  The importance of maintaining clear exit routes is also covered.

The online Fire Safety training uses a story-telling approach in Lesson 2 to illustrate what can go wrong if people do not practice good housekeeping, and if they delay their evacuation.  Learners are able to undo the mistakes made by the character in the story in order to save the day. Information is included to help learners decide if they might need a Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan (PEEP), or to provide information if they have been asked to assist a colleague or visitor with a PEEP.

The Fire Safety online training provides a brief outline of fire extinguishers that might be available in the event of a fire but is not intended to teach learners how to use them.  The emphasis of the advice is to get safely away from a fire. Emergency first aid for non-specialists is included, focusing on action that can be taken while waiting for a first aider or the emergency services.

Questions and interactive exercises, such as matching tasks, are used to prompt the user to think about how to apply the lessons learnt in the course. As with all our courses, a designated course administrator can edit the text and images within the EssentialSkillz online Fire Safety course, and link to organisation-specific documentation, all at no extra cost.  For example, you can add in details of Assembly area locations, information on how to contact a fire warden, or a link to a local PEEP process.

  • To understand the causes of fires and how they spread.
  • To recognise the role you can play in the prevention of fires.
  • To know what to do if you discover a fire or hear an alarm in your workplace.
  • To explain our responsibilities to others during an evacuation.

On successful completion of the test users can download and print a certificate.

The course is RoSPA approved

The course lasts approximately 45 minutes, although this can depend on the level of existing knowledge.

Users are required to take a final test consisting of 10 default questions. The default pass mark is 70%

The course administrator within your organisation can:

  • Change the pass mark
  • Implement the random test question feature which selects 10 questions from a bank of 20.
  • Can specify that more than 10 questions must be answered (up to the full bank of 20 questions)

Target Audience

The course is suitable for all staff as an introduction to fire safety or as a refresher course.  It could be used to prepare non-specialists for more specific training, such as the EssentialSkillz online Fire Warden course.

The course should be supplemented with local information about alarm processes, escape routes and assembly areas.  Some of this can be added to the course by the course administrator, but it is recommended that all staff are shown exit routes and assembly areas where this is practical.

Although common fire extinguishers are described, passing this online course is not evidence of competence to use an extinguisher.  The emphasis of the course is on preventing fires and maintaining escape routes, and in the event of a fire, rapidly clearing the location.  If an organisation’s fire risk assessment recommends that staff are trained in the use of fire extinguishers, hands-on practical training should be provided.

The course is aimed at non-specialists who need to understand their role in preventing fires, maintaining safe exits routes and responding quickly in the event of an alarm.  It is not a guide to those responsible for maintaining fire safety systems, for example facilities departments in charge of testing and maintaining emergency lighting, fire alarm systems and extinguishers.
