Course Introduction

The use of asbestos in construction or refurbishment was banned in the UK at the end of 1999 because of its deadly effects. Despite this, around 5000 people still die each year in the UK from asbestos-related diseases. This is the biggest cause of work-related deaths in the UK. While some of this exposure is historical, while asbestos is present in the workplace people will continue to be exposed if they don’t know how to protect themselves and others from exposure to asbestos.

This Asbestos Awareness Online Training course course takes on average 40 minutes to complete.

Course Content

The message in this course is that all asbestos is dangerous if disturbed, but that the risk can be managed. The course explains the consequences of disturbance, and describes how to work safely in workplaces which contain asbestos. It does not cover any techniques for the removal of asbestos.

Because this course does not follow the UKATA syllabus, it is able to leave out a lot of technical and management information. For example, there is no information about the shape of fibres under a microscope, the names of the minerals, or the colour labels given to different types of asbestos fibres. Instead, it provides practical information, with examples, of the locations where asbestos is found. Images are used to help the learner recognise the types of locations or objects that might contain asbestos.

The course explains when and how to use an asbestos register to avoid disturbing asbestos, and what to do if there are any concerns about the accuracy of the asbestos register, or the state of the asbestos.

Like all EssentialSkillz courses, this Asbestos Awareness eLearning course can be customised to meet your needs, enabling your workforce to understand the specific policies and procedures developed for your organisation. A designated course administrator can edit the text and images within the course, and link to organisation-specific documentation, all at no extra cost.

Compliance

Why is this course important for compliance?

  • The Approved Code of Practice and guidance on the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 (L143) requires that ‘Asbestos awareness training should be given to employees whose work could foreseeably disturb the fabric of a building and expose them to asbestos or who supervise or influence the work’ (para 232). This course meets this requirement.
  • Asbestos Awareness training is not suitable for workers intending to work with, remove or otherwise disturb asbestos or ACMs.

Add your own questions

Create your own question and answer bank to test your users on the key information that they need to know to be fully compliant. Set core questions to appear in the test section that users are required to pass so that crucial learning points are reinforced.

Who should take this course?

This course is intended for people working in jobs where they could accidentally disturb asbestos, and need to know how to avoid this risk. This includes trades such as plumbers, decorators and installation engineers. It is also useful for those who might only occasionally come across asbestos, but still need to be aware of how to avoid damaging it. For example, teachers, health care staff, shop workers or porters working in buildings built before 2000.

This course is not intended for managers and duty holders. They will need a UKATA approved course, and ideally BOHS course on asbestos management.
