The course explains the importance of health and safety and the role of managers in encouraging worker engagement to promote health and safety in the workplace. The legal and enforcement context is explained, but health and safety is more than a set of rules.
This course guides managers through the steps needed to make sure that the experience of those who carry out activities in the workplace is incorporated into the policies that impact them, and the procedures they follow.
Managers are encouraged to look at the policies and processes in their own organisation, to understand the way that work has been planned. The risk assessment process is explained, although the separate risk assessment course from EssentialSkillz provides more detail on this topic. In this course, risk assessment is put into context: risk assessments are there to make sure people can do things safely, and without harm to health.
A routine of active and proactive checks is key to a successful health and safety management system, and to improved risk assessments. The course explains the differences between active and proactive checks and provides examples of each. Within this, the importance of reporting incidents (including accidents, near-misses and dangerous occurrences) is explained. The learner is encouraged to compare what they are learning in the course with how things are done in their own workplace so that they can apply their learning directly.
Learners will be approaching this course from many different perspectives. Some will be responsible for writing policies and procedures and will be able to improve and change these in response to active and proactive checks. Other managers will be in a position where they must work with the processes in place. All managers are encouraged to consider what they can do to improve the management of health and safety in their workplaces.
