Course Introduction

Personal protective equipment (PPE) refers to clothing and equipment that can protect people from injury and ill health when risks cannot be controlled enough in other ways.. Examples of PPE include safety helmets, gloves, eye protection, high-visibility clothing, safety footwear, safety harnesses and respiratory protective equipment (RPE).

Employees must wear PPE in the workplace where required by the organisation’s procedures and risk assessments. This EssentialSkillz PPE course does not cover all forms of PPE for all hazards, but it does outline some general principles to follow. In addition to this course, employees will need practical, hands-on training, including demonstrations of how to don (put on) and doff (take off) PPE.

This Personal Protective Equipment Online Training course takes on average 50 minutes to complete.

Course Content

The course explains how different types of PPE can be used to protect against different hazards in a range of situations. Principles are explained so that learners can relate the learning to their own workplace, and to the PPE they need to wear.

The limitations of PPE are discussed, so that the importance of controlling the hazard at source is understood. The course provides examples of how to reduce risks to health, as well as safety, before considering PPE. While PPE is the final layer of protection, it remains an indispensable control for some activities, and so the course includes advice on how to counter excuses typically given for not wearing PPE.

The care and appropriate use of PPE is a shared responsibility between employers and employees. The course explains what is expected of the employee, and what they can expect of their employer. In particular, the employee needs to report any difficulties they have in wearing PPE, so that problems can be resolved. The learner is asked reflective questions to encourage them to apply their learning to their own work setting.

Like all EssentialSkillz courses, this Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) eLearning course can be customised to meet your needs, enabling your workforce to understand the specific policies and procedures developed for your organisation. A designated course administrator can edit the text and images within the course, and link to organisation-specific documentation, all at no extra cost.

Compliance

Why is this course important for compliance?

  • The Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations require that PPE is fit for purpose, maintained and stored properly, and used correctly by employees. These Regulations also require employers to provide adequate information, instruction and training about the use of PPE.
  • The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations require employers to provide and refresh relevant training.
  • Combined with on-the-job training and supervision, the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) eLearning course will help you to meet these obligations.

Who should take this course?

The course is suitable for those who need to wear PPE as part of a safe system of work, and those tasked with considering how PPE fits into the risk assessment of a task or location. Although examples are given to help people think about selection of different types of PPE, the course is not a substitute for technical advice on choosing specific PPE to match particular hazards. Always obtain information from the manufacturer or supplier as to the suitability of PPE (especially RPE and gloves) for the substances to which users will be exposed.
