Description

The EssentialSkillz Manual Handling online training covers lifting and lowering, carrying, pushing and pulling. It provides an introduction to the anatomy of the back so that learners can understand the importance of avoiding hazardous handling approaches, and work out which of the handling tasks they carry out could put undesirable strain on their bodies.

The online Manual Handling course explains how to use “TILE” (Task, Individual, Load, Environment) to assess the risks of a handling task, and to plan the work to reduce the risk. The principles of good lifting technique are covered, with illustrations to show examples of good practice.  Typical problems with lifting are explained, to help students avoid these problems (for example, handling slippery loads, twisting at the same time as lifting or lowering). Examples of specific types of lift (team lifts, lifting into a car boot, lifting while seated, two-stage lift) are included.

Like all EssentialSkillz courses, this online Manual Handling training can be customised to meet your needs, enabling your workforce to understand the specific policies and procedures you have developed for your organisation. A designated course administrator can edit the text and images within the course, and link to organisation-specific documentation that may be in place, all at no extra cost.

Course Objectives

  • To highlight the consequences of poor manual handling approaches.
  • To encourage you to risk assess your manual handling tasks.
  • To demonstrate good handling techniques.
  • To raise your awareness of your manual handling habits.

Certification

On successful completion of the test users can download and print a certificate.

The course is RoSPA approved

Duration

The course lasts approximately 45 minutes, although this can depend on the level of existing knowledge.

Test

Users are required to take a final test consisting of 10 default questions. The default pass mark is 70%

The course administrator within your organisation can:

  • Change the pass mark
  • Implement the random test question feature which selects 10 questions from a bank of 20.
  • Can specify that more than 10 questions must be answered (up to the full bank of 20 questions)

While the test provides evidence of understanding the information provided in the course, it is recommended that where a job role includes significant elements of manual handling, understanding is assessed by a competent person observing the individual carrying out handling in the workplace.

Target Audience:

Any employees or contractors could usefully use this course as part of an induction process, or as refresher training.  Where manual handling is a significant element of an individual’s job role, it is recommended that this course is used as part of a blended learning approach, for example as preparation for a skills-based practical course, or as a refresher of the key points.
