Assessing risks is an essential part of the effective running and management of any organisation. While risks can come in all shapes and sizes, employers have a legal duty to assess the risks to the health and safety of their employees – including contractors, and members of the public – while they are at work. As well as legal requirements, there are also sound financial and ethical reasons to manage risks, reducing the associated costs with accidents and ill-health.

Effective risk management depends upon carrying out a risk assessment, which should consist of a consideration of anything that could cause harm to people in the work environment. The primary aim of the assessment is to reduce risks to acceptable levels, by implementing appropriate control measures.

The EssentialSkillz Risk Assessment eLearning course has been designed to introduce managers to the concept and importance of carrying out effective risk assessments, and their responsibilities to ensure that risks are appropriately managed. The course explains the difference between hazards and risks and demonstrates how to assess the likelihood and impact of a range of different risks.

The online course also highlights the role of recording risks, and of keeping those records up to date. When incidents do occur, investigating authorities are entitled to demand to see risk assessments, procedures and controls alongside the incident report.

The course demonstrates how to carry out a risk assessment that is appropriate for different types and sizes of business, exploring the five key areas that should be included in all risk assessments: the identification of risks; who is likely to be harmed; evaluation of risk; recording; and review.

Target Audience:

This course is suitable for all workers involved in developing a risk assessment and/or enforcing procedures in the workplace.  This applies to all employers, managers and supervisors, regardless of the industry or environment that they work in.

Course Objectives:

  • To introduce the concept of risk assessment.
  • To explain the difference between hazards and risk and what factors to consider when assigning risk to a hazard.
  • To highlight users responsibilities in relation to risk assessments.
  • To describe the risk assessment process and teach how to carry out an assessment.
  • To advise on the legal requirements to carry out a risk assessment.
  • To explain the importance of recording and maintaining risk assessment records.



Once the 40 minute course is completed, users will be required to take a final test consisting of as default, 10 required questions out of a bank of 20 questions.  The course administrator within your organisation can set a pass threshold, depending on your requirements and decide to implement the random test question feature. On successful completion of the test, users can download and print a certificate.
