Unregistered gas worker puts lives at risk…
A plumber based in the Norfolk area has been proescuted for proceeding to carry out gas work without fulfilling his legal obligations while working for a landlord in Norwich.
The 54-year-old man appeared in court after the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) discovered he had installed a gas boiler despite the fact he was not registered with Gas Safe, an organisation that all gas workers are obliged to register with.
Norwich Magistrates’ Court was told that the plumber went ahead with the gas work at a residence on Dover Street in Norwich in 2011 without having the proper qualifications to do so. In situations like this the risk to tenants is significantly increased as the gas worker has not necessarily received the required training to carry out the job safely.
The plumber was handed a 12-month conditional discharge and asked to pay £100 in costs after he pleaded guilty to a breach of the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 on 12 June 2013.
HSE Inspector Ivan Brooke spoke about the potential dangers associated with unregistered gas work after the hearing:
“Although nobody was injured in this incident, there were potentially grave consequences for the residents.
“The case highlights the fact that unregistered gas work is still quite common, putting people’s lives at risk as a result. Homeowners, landlords and tenants should always request ID and check workers are properly accredited.”
The Chief Executive of Gas Safe, Russell Kramer also commented on the case:
“Every Gas Safe registered engineer carries a Gas Safe ID card, which shows who they are and the type of gas appliances they are qualified to work on.
“We always encourage the public to ask for and check the card and, if they have any concerns about the safety of work carried out in their home, to speak to us.”
