According to the Institute of Alcohol Studies, a study in 1994, revealed that 90% of personnel directors from top UK organisations stated that alcohol consumption was a problem in their workplace, with 17% seeing it as a major issue. More recently, data has shown that more than 9 million people in England drink over the recommended daily limits, leading to nearly 8,700 alcohol-related deaths in 2014. It has been estimated that alcohol is the cause of as much as 5% of all absences from work, equating to up to 14 million lost working days in the UK each year. An estimated 200,000 UK workers turn up to work each day suffering from a hangover. And the cost of lost productivity could be as much as £7.3 billion per year.
Alcohol Awareness and health.
Alcohol can have significant negative impacts on health. Alcohol can raise blood pressure, increase the risk of heart disease and stroke, cause liver damage, cirrhosis of the liver, and increase the risk of cancers of the mouth and throat. Additionally, alcohol can cause behavioural changes, bad behaviour and poor discipline could lead to low morale for the rest of your employees, impacting productivity all round.
If staff consuming alcohol, are in charge of machinery, then there could be an increased risk of workplace accidents, as reaction times and decision making abilities can be impaired. And being under the influence of alcohol can make some people aggressive and even violent, potentially putting all your employees at risk.
